The treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, is based on the prevention of acid backflow into the esophagus. There is no cure for GERD, only management of its symptoms. The primary goal of the treatments is to bring the symptoms under control so that the individuals suffering from this disease can live a normal life. Treatment also helps the esophagus heal from the damage stomach acid causes. There are many forms of treatment for GERD, which can range from simple changes in a person?s lifestyle, to drastic surgery. The lifestyle changes people can make to treat GERD involve avoiding factors that aggravate the symptoms of this disease. A person's diet does not cause GERD. It does, however, cause the most common symptom of this disease. Heartburn is the primary symptom people complain about when suffering from GERD. Avoiding certain foods can help prevent constant heartburn. Another contributing factor to the reflux of acid into the esophagus is gravity. Lying down after a meal could cause the food and stomach acid to come back into the esophagus and cause heartburn. Staying upright until the food is digested may prevent acid reflux. Another contributing factor to GERD is being overweight. The fats in the abdominal section may put pressure on the stomach. Losing weight can help treat the symptoms. Other types of treatments are taking over the counter medications, such as antacids. These medications are a temporary solution, since they temporarily relieve heartburn by neutralizing the stomach acids. This is however only a short term solution. If a person is suffering from GERD symptoms more than twice a week, they should consult a doctor for proper help. Doctors usually prescribe certain medications to help alleviate the symptoms. However, in some of the most severe circumstances, surgery is necessary. Regardless of the treatment a person may choose, consulting a physician is the most important thing a person can do. If you are suffering from heartburn constantly, see your doctor immediately so you can get the proper treatment.
